Manchester Americana Festival
Following the success of the last 3 festivals, the 4th Manchester Americana Festival will take place on Saturday 23rd May 2015. This year we’re using a new venue, the Prestwich Legion club, which is already becoming well established as one of North Manchester’s leading live music venues. The Legion is at 225 Bury Old Road, Prestwich, Manchester M25 1JE, and is very close to Heaton Park metro station.
As before, the lineup is a mixture of well-established and up-and-coming acts, with an emphasis on New Country. Admission is only £5 (pay on the door) for the whole day, so make the most of it and get there early! There are plenty of places nearby to grab a bite to eat during the day.
Programme for the day:
3pm – doors open
3.20pm – Steve O’Donoghue
Classic singer-songwriter, one of the best to come out of Manchester in recent years – few can match Steve when it comes to writing songs about the disintegration of relationships. http://www.reverbnation.com/steveodonoghue
4.20pm – Risa Hall
Risa Hall is the real deal when it comes to Americana, having grown up with The Ramones in Forest Hills, NYC. Her music is a gutsy mix of country, blues and jazz influences, with (not surprisingly) a dash of punk as well. http://www.risahall.com/
5.20pm – The Blazing Snowmen
This Prestwich-based outfit may have only tenuous links to Americana, through their lowlife jazzy musical arrangements, but they are musical satirists of the highest order and not to be missed! https://myspace.com/theblazingsnowmen
6.20pm – Picnic Area
A white knuckle ride through Britain’s blue collar suburbia with south Manchester’s alt country allstars, recently featured at the Grillstock festival and London’s legendary Slaughtered Lamb. Currently finishing off their second studio album with John Ellis at Middleton’s Limefield Studios.www.reverbnation.com/picnicarea Also see interview at http://mancunianmatters.co.uk/content/25053647-interview-country-rockers-picnic-area-manchester-and-americana-inspired-album-you-k
7.20pm – Hannah Rose Platt
An up-and-coming star of Britain’s New Country scene, Hannah Rose Platt has been described as “a young, north of England Emmylou Harris” by none other than Sid Griffin of The Long Ryders. https://soundcloud.com/hannahroseplatt
8.20pm – Mr Plow
Johnny Cash rhythms and songs of murder, mystery and mayhem from Leicester’s Mr Plow. https://www.facebook.com/mrplowsplace
9.20pm – Ash Mountain
One of Manchester’s leading New Country acts, featuring charismatic lead vocalist Ali Matthews. https://myspace.com/ashmountain/music/songs
10.20pm – The Good Intentions
Liverpool-based country band The Good Intentions have won a string of awards, including Best Americana Act of the Year 2011 in the British Country Music awards. In addition to acclaim for their albums “Poor boy” and “Someone else’s time”, they have also received national television coverage. Their recent release “Travelling companion” has been described by Maverick magazine as “Genuine, high class traditional country music, with the roots firmly attached”. www.thegoodintentions.co.uk
