Manchester Americana Festival
Following the success of the last 4 festivals, the 5th Manchester Americana Festival will take place on Saturday 14th May 2016. This year we’re using the same venue as last year, the Prestwich Legion club, which is already becoming well established as one of North Manchester’s leading live music venues. The Legion is at 225 Bury Old Road, Prestwich, Manchester M25 1JE, and is very close to Heaton Park metro station.
As before, the lineup is a mixture of well-established and up-and-coming acts, with an emphasis on New Country. Admission is only £5 (pay on the door) for the whole day, so make the most of it and get there early! There are plenty of places nearby to grab a bite to eat during the day.
Programme for the day:
1pm – doors open
1.40pm – surprise special guests, obviously playing something in the Americana vein!
2.20pm – Aerynn
Oregon-born, Manchester-based Aerynn’s manifesto is “I don't promise perfection but I promise something real”. She plays what she describes as “corroded folk music”, full of atmosphere and emotion.http://www.aerynn.com/music.html
3.20pm – Jim McShee
Jim’s music is a genuinely British take on new country, influenced by the likes of Johnny Cash, but reflecting the realities of life in his native Stoke-on-Trent with warmth as well as hard-hitting lyrics.http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jimmcshee
4.20pm – Blueberry Agenda
Rising from the ashes of the late lamented Homegrown Jones, Manchester/ Lincolnshire based Blueberry Agenda offer haunting male/ female vocal harmonies, beautiful melodicism and the occasional cheeky Americana cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2lCY7PdnNU
5.20pm – Risa Hall
Another of the genuine Americans on the bill, having grown up with The Ramones in Forest Hills, NYC. Her music is an intoxicating mix of pop, soul, jazz and country, and she has an excellent, brand new album to promote. http://www.risahall.com/
6.20pm – Picnic Area
A white knuckle ride through Britain’s blue collar suburbia with south Manchester’s alt country allstars. Currently receiving excellent reviews for their new album “Classics” on John Ellis’ Limefield Records, and Akademia Award winners for their song “Right about me”. https://picnicareamusic.wordpress.com/

7.20pm – Mog Stanley
A true rising star of the north west’s alt country scene, Mog Stanley is that rare combination of excellent musicianship, great songwriting and sonic experimentation. Catch him while you can! https://soundcloud.com/mogstanley
8.20pm – Garron Frith
Critically acclaimed local songwriter responsible for some heartbreakingly beautiful songs. As the Daily Express (no less!) writes, of his latest album “Away from the bright lights”: ‘ If someone of the calibre of Ryan Adams or Josh Ritter was delivering this, everyone would be gushing about songs like "Not the Man", "The Remedy" and "Good Thing"’. His third album is due out any time now... http://www.garronfrith.co.uk/
9.20pm – The Good Intentions
Liverpool-based country band The Good Intentions have won a string of awards, including Best Americana Act of the Year 2011 in the British Country Music awards. In addition to acclaim for their albums “Poor boy” and “Someone else’s time”, they have also received national television coverage. Their recent release “Travelling companion” has been described by Maverick magazine as “Genuine, high class traditional country music, with the roots firmly attached”. www.thegoodintentions.co.uk
10.20pm – Quiet Loner
Quiet Loner aka Matt Hill is one of the best loved figures on Britain’s new country scene, and his songs of infidelity, murder, suicide, as well as social comment transcend the limitations of the genre. “Secret ruler of the world” became Americana UK’s album of the year for 2004, and he has followed this up with the acclaimed “Spectrology”, as well as ”Greedy magicians”, a live album of protest songs. He has played the protest stage at Glastonbury – at Billy Bragg’s request! – as well as being one of the leading lights behind the “We Shall Overcome” nationwide musical protest at the government’s austerity policies. http://quietloneruk.wordpress.com/
