“RAT-A-TAT-TAT”
I saw Cash Savage and the Last Drinks at The Flying Saucer Club earlier this year, just before the band embarked on a European tour. It was a memorable night. I recall the intensity that Cash always brings with her, mixed with the joy of performing with a group of musicians that seem to be loving every minute of being on stage together. When I assemble and publish the list of my best live shows for 2015 (out by the end of the month), that gig will definitely be in the mix.
From all reports the tour in Europe was very successful with a well-attended foray into six countries. The band played three festivals in Czech Republic, including to crowds 40,000 strong at the acclaimed Colours of Ostrava, as well as bar shows across Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Poland and France.
Fresh off the boat, Cash Savage and the Last Drinks present us with a brand new single, “Rat-a-tat-tat”.
Rat-a-tat-tat is a song about insomnia, more than anything else. Ever since I was a kid my heartbeat has kept me awake.– Cash Savage
The single was recorded in Prague at Golden Digital No’1s. During a short break in the tour, the band members spent two days meticulously smashing out two songs, sleeping overnight in the studio. Along with engineer Amak Golden and post-production team Nao Anzai and Nick Finch, Cash Savage and her beloved band created what would become their unofficial European tour anthem, “Rat-a-tat-tat”.
The band has emerged from a run of successes following the second album The Hypnotiser. The album featured in Top 10 Albums lists across publications including the Herald Sun, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, was a finalist at the prestigious EG Awards for lead single “I’m In Love”, Album of the Week on Triple R and PBS radio stations, and among the Top 25 Highly Recommended albums on the Coopers AMP Music Prize list. Read my review of The Hypnotiser.
Heading into 2016, the momentum shows no sign of slowing.
