Blue Rose Code has pretty much come from nowhere, in the span of two years Edinburgh-born Ross Wilson has been plucked from the obscurity of writing songs in an East London flat to releasing two albums with a third ready to go.
Grateful is a nice little tasty for his forth-coming release ….And Lo! The Bird Is On The Wing in January at Glasgow's Celtic Connections. His second album The Ballads Of Peckham Rye featuring Danny Thompson, Karine Polwart, John Wetton, Aidan O’Rourke and Kathryn Williams was nominated for the Scottish Album of The Year Awards in 2014, and it doesn’t stop there with a number of prestigious gigs North of the Border (with more to follow, and Awards to go with the nominations if I am not much mistaken).
Here he is joined by some of Scotland’s finest folk and jazz musicians, plus from Nashville The McCrary Sisters join him for the beautiful title-track “Grateful”. Another involved is Hollywood A-Lister Ewan McGregor who has been taken by Wilson’s staggering talent, his understated, caring songwriting style especially draws the listener like a magnet.
“Midnight Mass In Suffolk’s Breast” sprinkled with numerous instrumental hues to go with his vocals (and additional harmonies), as for the following cut “My Heart, My Sun”, a James Yuill remix produces a feel not dissimilar to the music of Paul Simon.
Mellow piece, divided into three you have “In The Morning Parts 1,2 & 3 (Live On The Roddy Hart Show) is a finely spun reflective affair eloquently warmed in a delicate Scottish muse.
