Israel Young founded the Folklore Center on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village in 1957. The timing was perfect for an establishment that was as much a clubhouse as a store. Izzy Young: Talking Folklore Center is a documentary from Sweden made in 1989 recently issued on DVD following him as he visits the Village to remember the neighborhood which served as the center of the folk revival. We’ll hear music from the era from Bob Dylan, Rev. Gary Davis, Fred Neil and more including Allen Ginsberg reciting from Howl his most famous poem. We’ll also feature memories of the Coffeehouse scene from Dave Van Ronk. Turn back the clock to relive those days of the Folklore Center and folk music in Greenwich Village.
