Preview of a new CD from Triboro
and WFDU-FM’s TRADITIONS Playlists for October 4 & 18, 2015
My guest on the October 4th show was Don Friedman, 1/3 of the trio Triboro. The members of Triboro represent three of the five boroughs of New York City, Don lives in Brooklyn, Phylis Elkind in Manhattan and Evy Mayer in the Bronx. The group has just released their second CD, appropriately titled Harmony x 3. The CD comes 12 years after their first recording was released. The three met through the Folk Music Society of New York (formerly NY Pinewoods) where they would sing together at various club functions. Their love of harmony led to the formation of the trio and now we have a wonderful new collection of songs to share on the radio!
Three person harmony, when done correctly, is a beautiful experience. Triboro gets it right and delivers a wide-ranging collection featuring 16 tunes that showcase the individual tastes and specialties of all three members as well as the compelling group harmony that has become the trademark for this talented trio.
At times, Triboro whisks us back in time as their vocals glimmer with the spirit of the Carter Family, in fact the new CD ends with A.P. Carter’s “The Winding Stream.” The trio’s harmonies also carry us into the present with charming covers of songs from Iris Dement, Gillian Welch and Lou & Peter Berryman. Each song on this new collection is newly arranged by the trio making even old chestnuts like “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” sound fresh and attractive.
The diverse song selection on the CD features representations from gospel, old-timey, Hawaiian, bluegrass and contemporary singer-songwriter styles. I particularly loved their rendition of a song they learned from the work of Joseph Spence – “Great Dream From Heaven.”
The three artists share a mutual chemistry and respect for the songs they sing which ties all the songs together in a CD that I will be listening to over and over again. I just hope we do not have to wait another 12 years for their next CD!
