Shinyribs started out as a stage name for Kevin Russell, former co-front man of The Gourds, which he used for a couple of side project he was doing while the Gourds were still a thing. Now in Kevin Russell’s post-Gourds era, Shinyribs has grown into a full-fledged band. Okra Candy is the latest Shinyribs effort and, true to Kevin Russell’s quirky spirit, the album is full of odd yet strangely poignant metaphors, funky riffs, and twangy pickin’. His stories are full of down and out people whose only advantage is that they don’t know how brave they are being by living life their own way. Whether it’s hip shaking hippie dance music you’re after or some cajun fueled speed metal or deep woods blues or throwbacks to The Band you’re looking for, it’s bound to be tucked into Shinyribs music somewhere.
