Beautifully toned, Barbara Nesbitt’s music is pure and superbly crafted. After a spell living in San Diego (2005-2011) the Georgia-born singer-songwriter broadened her horizons even more when she moved to Austin, Tx. It was there she help form the band, The Whiskey Sisters and simultaneously continue develop her solo career. Nesbitt’s ability to project her voice with minimal of force sets her apart from the majority of acts today, and when it comes to performing a duet with Bill Coomes (he also plays drums, percussion and sings harmony vocals on the record) her talent glows like a beacon. As heard as they perform a stellar version of Kasey Chambers’ superb song “Sweetest Waste Of Time”. It is followed, immediately by Dobro and accordion warmed “Graceless”; as for beautiful music the listener is spoilt for choice as Nesbitt (acoustic, tremelo guitar) and Jeff Berkley (he also produced the record), plus Marcia Claire (bass), Mike Spurgat (electric guitar), Dennis Caplinger (fiddle, Dobro, banjo), Kim Deschamps (pedal steel, Dobro) and Bukka Allen (accordion, Hammond B3, piano) provide some of the finest and most exquisite musicianship around. Tasty!
Apart from the superb production, quality songs and Nesbitt’s aching tones on the likes of gritty southern soul dripping piece “Like A Good Girl Should”. Possessing hints of the Shelby Lynne she sounds she powerful and focused she could outdo a thunderstorm. Others up there include tender love ballad “Weightless”, while aided by the bright and breezy fiddle and banjo jostled ‘back roads’ leaning “Never Been In Love” Nesbitt brings a joyful feel to the record. Just before she sings, to accompaniment of electric lead guitar and more steel / banjo the more gritty, impassioned “Dancing On A Trap Door”, and of how ‘those green eyes get me every time’.
Others of note include “Like A Good Girl Should” as she again gets down to it and with a haunting (pedal steel) wistful edge, and mouth watering and Dobro “Don’t Think Much” has Nesbitt speaks of how she doesn’t think she’ll go back to Tennessee. On this showing Barbara Nesbitt is most certainly as act well worth travelling to see (see dates below).
