Paula Frazer’s unique, ethereal voice and beautiful songs are frequently described as dark country with an eclectic and lush mix of folk, blues, rock, and pop. She performs with her band Tarnation, which consists of singer-songwriter and guitarist Jacob Aranda, a talented artist in his own right, Sam Berman on drums, and David Cuetter (Big Still, That Hideous Strength) on pedal steel. Paula has a large fan base in the Bay area and performs regularly in venues like The Fillmore, The Chapel, Great American Music Hall, The Rite Spot, The Make Out Room, Amnesia, the Verdi Club, Starline Social Club and many other places.
Not many American singers with a country twang are actually from the Deep South, but such is the case for Paula. Growing up with a Father who was a minister and a Mother who taught piano in Georgia and Arkansas, she moved to San Francisco in the 1980s and played with many local bands then began a band called Tarnation in the 1991. Paula released 2 albums on 4AD, 1 on Reprise and four albums on Birdman Records and embarked on various touring appearances, in Europe and the US with bands like Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Moore Brothers, The Tindersticks and others. She has also appeared on recordings with artists including Cornershop, Jonathan Richman, Mark Eitzel, Sean Lennon, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Tindersticks, and the Czars. Paula’s songs have appeared on soundtracks like GI Jane, The Break Up, Joyride, Nevada, Gambling and has appeared on other movies and commercials.
Already having known a long and illustrious musical career, Paula’s new album What Is And Was on LA label New High Recordings is Paula’s 8th album and the first full-length release in ten years. It’s a wonderful, complex record that will have the listener alternately dream and dance, swoon and laugh – and perhaps also tear up with emotion. Seeing Paula perform is watching a woman who brings all her lived and passionate experience to the stage.
