Know Your Destiny – Chris Cavill & The Prospectors – A Review

chris cavill know your destinyIt’s proving to be a top year for Australian releases.

Chris Cavill & The Prospectors have independently issued Know Your Destiny, a mature and engaging collection.  On the album, the band members are Cavill (Vocals/Guitar/Ukulele/Harmonica), Dave Cafarella (Drums) and Michael Maguire (Lead Guitar/Vocals).  The album was produced by Damian Cafarella and Cavill and recorded and mixed by Cafarella at EDR Studios in Edithvale, just out of Melbourne.

First up, it’s not a long one – ten tracks and an aggregate of 33 minutes.  But it’s remarkably high shelf from the get go.  From the opening, delightful instrumental “Cooktown Suite” to the brilliant closer “San Diego”, there’s an assurity throughout.  “Across The Border” deftly assembles Cavill’s emotional lyrics, his strong and evocative voice, with the backing vocals and the playing adding precise embellishment – it’s catchy alright.  “Midnight Train” has just been released as the second single (see video below).  It is a hauntingly twisted love song to Melbourne’s lanes and its songwriters, tapping into the folklore of this great music city, paying homage to the struggles inherent in writing and performing.  Take the time to watch this inventive clip, you’ll be rewarded:

“Undone” is sparse and chillingly primal, another showcase for Cavill’s tremendous voice.  “Bring Me Down” and “Loretta” are slow, alt.country numbers with a distinctive riff and reverberating guitar which slide into the consciousness so easily. The mood shifts with the agreeable power chords of “Out On The Water”, while “Love ‘Em Til You Die” is instantly enjoyable.  “My Morning Grace” is ukelele only and is a celebration full of love, joy and the beauty of family.

But the best is left to last.  The longest track, a tale of being hurt and lost in “San Diego”.  It’s gripping and heartbreaking.  I doubt I’ll hear a finer song this year…from anyone!

Chris Cavill is impressive indeed. Know Your Destiny is a treat.  One of my favourite albums of the year so far.  Get a copy and savour it.
